Rehab is training in the presence of injury

“Rehab is training in the presence of injury.”
Phil Glasgow.

One of the key side quests of rehab is finding the opportunity within the injury. Focus in on that, and the whole thing shifts. The negative starts turning into a positive.

If you’ve ever been around a kid who broke their right arm, you’ve probably seen it without naming it. They still wanted to hoop every recess and lunch, so they did it with their left. Clumsy at first. Then not. By the time the cast came off, they had handles with both hands. The injury didn’t stop them. It gave them the weak side they’d never have built otherwise.

That’s the thing about the opportunity. It’s there. Honestly, it’s always there – physically, mentally or strategically. Sometimes it’s harder to see or create than other times, but it’s always there.

Physically, there’s almost always something you can still train, and often it’s the thing a normal season never leaves room for. The other hand. Mobility. Strength. The way you land and change direction.

Mentally, injury asks things of a young player that a smooth season never does. Patience. Showing up when the reward is a long way off. Learning how your own body works instead of just running it into the ground.

Strategically, the sideline is a strange kind of gift. A player who can’t run is a player who can finally watch. The game slows down from there. Spacing, reads, the habits of teammates and opponents, all easier to see when you’re not in the middle of it.

The catch is the opportunity doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes you have to go looking, or build it from scratch. That’s where a good network earns its keep. Physio, S&C and coaches, all pointed at the same question – what can this player work on right now that the healthy version of them never had time for. Get those people talking to each other and the road forward almost always shows up.

None of this is to romanticise getting hurt. But when it comes, rehab is not time lost. It’s a different road to the same destination.

Arrive there better.

This is the thinking behind our Comeback > Setback session, where we treat rehab as a chance to come back a better player. If you would like to bring it to your team, club or academy, get in touch at hello@healthyhooper.com.au.
